How do you choose your subjects?
What is your most treasured possession?
When it comes to asking people to
collaborate on portraits, as for my
recent project Expression: Portraits
of Artists, 昀椀rst and foremost it’s
because I’m a fan of their work, and I
feel there’s something about that work
that I can engage with.
When it comes to photography, it’s a
Hasselblad 501 CM medium format 昀椀lm
camera. I don’t 昀椀nd it practical to
shoot 昀椀lm professionally, but I enjoy
using it for certain projects. A few
recent portraits were taken with it,
including my portrait of Cornelia
Parker. Otherwise, it’s a small old
candlestick once owned by my Mum, made
partly of ebony and partly of silver.
If I’m taking portraits out in the
world for fun, choosing people to
approach is an interesting part of
the process. It can be something
about them, not always obvious, but
something that appeals to me. It can
be something about them as a person;
their expression, or it might be what
they’re wearing; a splash of colour
that grabs my eye.
What is your greatest extravagance?
Pictures for our walls- mostly prints,
and my favourites are by the deceased
painter Howard Hodgkin. He was a very
proli昀椀c and talented printmaker, which
is good for me as I could never afford
his paintings…
What are your plans for 2025/26?
In addition to building on various
photographic projects, I’m also
working on a series of paintings
called Taught by Thirst. They’re
abstract seascapes painted in oil on
paper, one of which has been accepted
for an exhibition called Paper Works
at the RWA in Bristol which opens in
January.
