with the Lensman
Richard Boll is a Brighton-based photographer, whose work has been
exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery.
What was the 昀椀rst photo you remember taking?
I’ve got a very vague memory of taking a
picture of some pigeons in Covent Garden
when I was very young. I was with my Dad and
he let me use his camera, a great Canon A1
昀椀lm camera that he later gave to me.
What did it feel like to see your work exhibited in the
national portrait gallery?
Fantastic. I love the gallery, and it meant
a huge amount to see a picture I’d taken on
their walls for the 昀椀rst time. That was in
2006, a picture I’d taken called Joe which
won the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize. Then
to see my commissioned portrait of Sir David
Attenborough in the gallery was incredible.
Knowing it’s in their permanent collection
is more of a photographic legacy than I
could ever have hoped for, and it’s an image
I’m immensely proud of.
If you could photograph anybody, alive or
dead, who would it be?
I’ve never seen a bad photograph
of Jimi Hendrix, I think he’d be
fantastic to photograph.
Where would you most like to live?
Anywhere with my wife Louise is 昀椀ne
by me.
